No matter how far you get in surfing, you’re still going to have to beat the crowd. Pipe master and surf vlogger Jamie O’Brien has found a lot of ways to do that over the years, but the latest involved a trip to an Oahu wave pool, Wai Kai.
However, the journey didn’t start in chlorinated surf. In classic JOB fashion, his latest video begins with some barrels. O’Brien saddled up and paddled out at Ala Moana Bowls, where he was joined by some familiar faces, including fellow Pipeline regular Koa Rothman. Though it wasn’t the biggest Bowls can be, it was about as close to perfect as things can get.
Then came the main event – Wai Kai’s 100-foot-long standing wave. Though it’s more akin to a river wave than the North Shore’s natural offerings, it still proved to be eminently shreddable under JOB’s feet.
“There’s always waves here on the island. No matter if it’s freaking 80 foot, you can still score some little two-footers over here,” summed up O’Brien afterwards. “So fun. Great for practicing river surfing or whatever it is. You name it. I’m still getting better. I probably come here like once a month, but it’s still so much fun.”
