The Southern California coast has been battered this week. Amid the widespread destruction from powerful waves, Malibu officials found something even more sinister: a dead body.
Though Hurricane Marie did not make landfall, the storm sent powerful swells towards the state, which meant quality waves for surfers. But Marie also caused havoc along the coast. Famed surf enclave Malibu was forced to declare a state of emergency after a massive sinkhole swallowed the driveway of a beachfront home owned by Nicolas Cage. Farther south in Orange County, beachfronts were battered and homes were evacuated, with some even red-tagged, meaning they were deemed unsafe for re-entry.
However, perhaps the most surprising development of the swell was the discovery of a dead body. The corpse was found by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel around 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, at a beach north of Malibu Lagoon. Firefighters pulled the man from the water and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
The man’s identity and cause of death were not immediately available.
