If you’ve ever ridden a Flowrider, you know that wipeouts can often include face plants or cartwheels before you get ejected into the calm water. A British surfer who suffered such a Flowrider spill is seeking half a million British pounds from the resort due to “negligence in failing to properly control the amount of people using the wave machine,” according to an article in The Independent.
The man, Aidan Botha, was surfing the standing Flowrider wave at The Retallack Spa resort in Cornwall, England. Court documents say he crashed into another surfer and hit his head on the bottom in July of 2022. He claims it left him with a hyperextension injury that impacted nerves, causing him to experience a “white flash” and numbness in his right arm for 40 minutes.
It’s unclear how many surfers were sharing the wave with Botha when the injury occurred. The court documents say “staff failed to control access to the artificial wave and permitted multiple users to enter simultaneously and/or in quick succession, contrary to safe practice.”
Away Resorts Ltd., the owner of the facility, acknowledged they made mistakes, but they disagree with the injuries that Botha has described and the amount of money he’s seeking.
The resort features accommodation, wakeboarding, stand-up paddling, and a FlowRider wave, according to its site.
