According to Hawaii News Now, a 70-year-old man died two weeks after he was pulled from the water by lifeguards at Waikiki on the island of Oahu. The man was found unresponsive near his surfboard 100 yards offshore at the wave “Canoes” on April 22, where first responders administered first aid. He was then taken to the ICU and passed away on May 5.
The cause of death has not been released, and it’s unclear if the death was related to a surfing accident or an unrelated event that occurred while surfing. Authorities said there were no signs of foul play.
Social media posts indicate that the man was Joseph Espinada, a music teacher and surfer in Honolulu.
