A 12-year-old American boy has been bitten by a shark in the Bahamas. The child was on a tour of the Exuma Cays with his family when he was attacked.
According to a press release from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, officers responded to a report of a shark attack on Tuesday, shortly before 3:30 p.m. Officers were informed that a 12-year-old American boy was being transported to New Providence by boat, after being attacked by a shark in Staniel Cay, Exuma.
The victim’s mother told to police that their family was on a tour of Exuma Cays at the time. The victim was swimming along with his brother when a shark attacked him. The nature of the boy’s injuries has not been specified, but the report stated that he received medical treatment and was last listed in stable condition.
Though shark attacks are relatively rare, this is not the first time in recent memory an American has encountered one while visiting the Bahamas. Last year, two American tourists survived a double shark attack. Rileigh Decker, 20, and Summer Layman, 24, were swimming in the waters of Bimini Bay, when they encountered what they believe to have been a bull shark. Later that year, another American was attacked by a shark while spearfishing off the island of Abaco.
