Ben Gravy has surfed a lot of waves. Waves of all kinds, from river to big to tidal bores to ferry. The novelty wave is his bread and butter, and according to him, there’s no place like home for a novelty wave hunter. And there’s no wave for a novelty wave hunter like a ferry wave. Ben called the the one featured here the biggest ferry wave on record — which might be a bit of hyperbole, but hey, can you blame him for being an excitable guy?
“What an honor and a crazy coincidence it is to live in the novelty capital of the world: the great state of New Jersey!” He wrote. “When we don’t have waves there’s always an option and it’s very fun to share these experiences with visiting surfers, like Zeke, to show them that NJ is holding FOR THE DREAM!”
The Zeke he speaks of is outspoken Zeke Szekely, who recently went rogue on his first day working for the WSL. Zeke’s a bit like Gravy when it comes to waves: if he can see it, he’ll try and surf it.
Before Ben and Zeke got on with the business of chasing ferries, Ben had some important business to attend to. It’s all part and parcel of being an internet surf celebrity, but it needs to be done. In this case, the important business was a Sun Bum sponsored banana eating contest with a surprisingly large cash prize of $3,500 for the first person to suck down 15 bananas. Ben did not fare so well, but as he said, “I’m not a professional banana eater.”
After the daily limit of potassium reached, Ben met up with Zeke and got on with the getting on. After a first session that didn’t go all that well, Ben and Zeke were joined by Will Boothby, a guy who’s been in many of Gravy’s videos. With a new boat, a Jet Ski, and a can-do attitude, they managed to ride a few of what might just be the best ferry waves Gravy’s ever ridden.
