Jack Robinson has had a down year, and the Fiji Pro didn’t help his standing in the Championship Tour rankings.
The 28-year-old is used to chasing titles. He’s been in the top five each of the past four seasons. But this year, he’s sitting in 14th and has only cracked the quarterfinals once.
At the Fiji Pro, he had a tough draw against Barron Mamiya in round two and fell in his first heat. However, instead of heading home to rest before Trestles, Robinson stayed in Fiji to take advantage of his newfound free time. He surfed Cloudbreak and Restaurants, stayed on a boat, and shared waves with the local surfers.
When Robinson appeared on the WSL’s Lineup podcast last month, he revealed that he’d been having a hard time finding the pure joy in surfing as of late. He needed to find “little Jack” again, who was really enjoying every session. Well, Robinson says he found that old version of himself who could appreciate where he’s at in life.
“Fiji always stays in your heart. It’s a special place,” Robinson said. “We had an insane session today. It was a special one too because all of the local boys were out. We shared the lineup together and there was nobody out. It was just me and the local boys. Little Jack was back on this trip.”
