The Inertia

There’s a new contender emerging in the Palm Desert. Not content to let Palm Springs Surf Club have a monopoly on freshwater waves in the Coachella Valley, DSRT Surf is making a run for it. To promote that, the facility has been inviting a boatload of pros into its pool to build up momentum, and their chief hype man has been Jacob “Zeke” Szekely.

Zeke has already posted a few videos from the pool, but his latest also included a couple of famous friends. For his latest YouTube offering, the La Jolla native was joined by Griffin Colapinto, Cole Houshmand, Hayden Rogers, Kate Matson, Jett Schilling, as well as Josh and Sierra Kerr.

So what exactly precipitated this auspicious gathering? “The Wavegarden guys are here and we’re dialing in new stuff,” explained Don Rady, DSRT Surf’s main investor and majority owner. “So, we try new stuff and then [the surfers] give feedback to Wavegarden and we tweak it. So, when we have customers, we’ll have the best wave.”

But what’s the verdict on those waves? As Szekely tells it, they’re pretty crazy. “It’s the gnarliest slab ever created in a wave pool,” he crowed. “The heaviest barrel wave ever in a wave pool. And it’s probably the sickest barrel I’ve ever seen in a wave pool. So yeah, it was pretty special. That thing’s nuts, dude. World Tour surfers are opting out of it, but Sierra Kerr wrangled it.”

Of course, the action wasn’t limited to the barrel. The San Clemente crew also took to the skies as Wavegarden dialed in the air section. If the hype is to be believed, this could be something pretty wild when it finally does open.
