Every surfer has a bucket list of waves they want to surf. If you’re lucky, you’ll check most of them off, but I’d wager that most surfers dream of waves in tropical places. And of all the bucket list items, I’d also wager that the boat trip is up there at the top. Usually, though, boat trips involve warm-water waves, breaking perfectly in crystal clear water while fish flit beneath your board as you fly down the line. But in recent years, as crowds have gotten thicker and wetsuits have gotten better, tropical waves aren’t the only waves on a bucket list, especially for those attracted to the more exploratory aspects of surfing. Freezing, remote waves in far flung destinations are gaining attention, and EYOS Expeditions, a company that specializes in private super-yacht boat trips, is offering a voyage of a different kind.
“Through a first-time partnership with expedition ship Vikingfjord, EYOS is now offering exclusive private charters through Westfjords, Iceland, one of the most isolated regions,” reads a press release. “Operating during Iceland’s off-season from January through April 2027, the Westfjords offer rugged, untouched coastlines, world-class northern swells, and the rare opportunity to ride isolated Arctic waves beneath the Northern Lights. With access only by sea, surfers can experience fjords that are virtually untouched by other vessels during that time, combining true expedition travel with one of the most unique cold-water surf environments in the world.”
The Vikingfjord will serve as a sort of floating base camp for these trips, which last for four days and three nights. Itineraries include not just surfing, but paddleboarding in fjords, exploring the rugged coastlines via Zodiac, hiking, and fishing. If four days and three nights isn’t quite enough, guests can go for seven days and six nights, which will include heli-skiing, 4×4 overland trips through the frozen valleys and snowy plateaus, and day trips snowshoeing, horseback riding, and kayaking.
Of course, a boat trip is never cheap, whether its through the Mentawai Island chain or through the fjords of Iceland. But if you’ve got the cash to splash, would there be a more unforgettable surf trip than this one?
