On July 1, 2025, 20-year-old Alexander Nguyen was hiking with his parents in Shannon Falls Provincial Park, a beautiful area near Squamish, British Columbia. Sometime in the afternoon, he simply vanished. Now, nearly a year later, his remains have been found.
According to reports, Nguyen’s cell phone pinged at 3:30 p.m. on the Sea to Summit trail. The ping was located just past where the trail connects with upper Shannon Falls, an area with a few steep inclines and sheer drop offs into the waterfall and pools below.
For three days, rescuers searched for him — some 70 volunteers, as well as drones and helicopters — but there was no trace. On July 4, officials called off the search.
“The full area was thoroughly searched and the individual was not located,” said RCMP Cpl. Alex Berube in a news release following Nguyen’s disappearance. “Therefore, at this time, the search has been called off.”
As the months went on, his friends and family never gave up hope. But on April 24, police were notified of the discovery of human remains near Shannon Falls. The body was recovered and it was confirmed to be that of Nyugen.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Alexander, who have endured several months of uncertainty and pain while he remained missing,” said Sea to Sky RCMP Insp. Robert Dykstra.
Although police say that no foul play is suspected and the investigation is now closed, the BC Coroners Service will continue to work to find out the cause of his death.
