Hydrofoils make the un-surfable surfable. Whether it’s downwind swells, unbroken ripples, or just plain flatwater. Now, professional foiler Nikolas Plytas has added one more thing to that list: a yacht.
If you pay attention to foiling at all, you’ve probably already seen Plytas in action. Last year, he managed to pull off the world’s first double backflip on a hydrofoil. It was a big moment for the still-growing sport – a history that only goes back to a few decades ago when pioneers like Laird Hamilton were strapping in to snowboard boots to do it. It was also a trick that, according to Red Bull, took more than 800 attempts before he finally stuck the landing.
Plytas’ most recent stunt is a little more playful, but no less dramatic. In a video posted to Instagram, he can be seen barreling towards the Naia, a 126-foot super-yacht operated by IYC. Before crashing into the side of the massive boat, he cuts a right, hits the wake, and launches his trademark backflip. BTS footage shows that there were a few failed attempts on the way, but in the end he stuck the landing.
“Luxury isn’t always about standing still,” he summed up in the caption. “Sometimes it’s about sending it.”
