A 20-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a lifeguard truck ran her over in Half Moon Bay, California. Local authorities believe the driver might have been distracted when the incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department told the SF Chronicle that the beachgoer was lying in the sand on Francis Beach when the lifeguard vehicle hit her. The truck belonged to the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
The Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the cause of the accident, but initial reports indicate the driver may not have been paying attention to what lay ahead while driving on the beach. They have not released the identity of the victim or the lifeguard who was driving.
The accident is the latest in a flurry of activity for first responders in the region. Last week, lifeguards rescued a woman in Pacifica who was swept out to sea by a rogue wave. Further south, two weeks ago, two college students drowned at a Santa Cruz beach when a large south swell carried them into the ocean.
