The Inertia

Lindsey Vonn’s Olympic comeback didn’t go as planned. Though the return to competition initially seemed auspicious, she endured a nasty fall at a World Cup race in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, which left her with a torn ACL. After that, she pushed ahead to race in the Games, which led to an even more brutal injury that mangled her leg. Since then, it’s been a long and painful recovery, but a recent update proved that she’s on the mend.

The news came as a result of an interview by Entertainment Tonight at the 2026 ESPY Awards. In a sharp contrast to previous images of her laid up in a hospital bed, she was found walking the red carpet wearing a Gucci dress. However, when asked about the progess of her recovery, she revealed that thing’s weren’t quite back to 100 percent.

“I love to push the envelope and I go as fast as my body allows. Normally that means I go faster than the doctor says, but this time was not the same,” Vonn explained. “I think I was a little bit slower than everyone expected.”

That being said, she is definitely much better than before. “My left leg is really good. My right ankle is still very much broken,” she continued. “So that’s a conversation for another day. It’s been slow but steady and I’m happy with where I am. Of course, always wish I was doing more, but I think patience is not my strong suit. So I’m learning.”

She also shared the mental toll the process has had on her. “It’s been really hard,” she admitted. “I mean, I was really isolated for a long time. I was literally immobile in the hospital for two and a half weeks and in a wheelchair after that for about six weeks. It was going from ‘I’m in the best shape of my life, I’m at the Olympics, number one in the world,’ to ‘I’m alone, isolated, immmobile.’ So it was a really drastic change and mentally that was really hard to adapt to. It was a lot of a lot of hard nights but, like everything, you you put one foot in front of the other and eventually one day it turns around. It did, thankfully, and now I’m in a better place, so I’m happy.”
