Just off Sumatra lies a tiny little island called Sipora. It’s a part of the Mentawai Island chain, and it has a wave that has become almost synonymous with it: Lance’s Right. But just around the corner lies Lance’s Left, a wave that’s world class by any surfer’s standard. And on June 22, it was nothing if not world class.
It’s a very long wave. Add to that the fact that it’s also just about as perfectly shaped as anyone could ever ask for and super consistent, as well, and you’ve got the recipe for a dream setup. Since it has a few different take-off spots, Lance’s Left doesn’t often feel as crowded as it is. When it gets over six feet or so, though, watch out.
When it’s under that, you can generally expect long, peeling waves with an easy take off, followed by a peeling wall that leads into several barrel sections. But overhead Lance’s Left becomes something else. It’s a steep and deep take off with a giant, open face and barrel sections that are too fast most of the time.
“Morning glass followed by northeast wind and some fun-size west swell was a good call for Lance’s Left,” wrote Surf Raw Files. “During the day got really crowded, but morning and evening, not many people surfed it!”
